Genre

My idea of genre has definitely evolved throughout this semester. I had an elementary idea of genre, that it was different subjects or topics that papers focus on. For instance, a book could be fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, a cookbook, instructional, etc. I almost envisioned genres as different boxes that a paper could be put in. While this is not necessarily wrong, throughout the semester I learned that genre has much more variety than just subjects, and genre is defined based on the structure, components, and language of the paper. My Lab Report, “Human Driver Ethics for Automated Vehicle Technology”, has specific required sections like the Abstract, Methods, and Results, which are not seen in any other type of paper, and set the guidelines for how to write a lab report. In contrast, my “Technical Description of the Playstation Dualshock 4 Controller” required Historical Background and Product Specifications sections, which were not necessary in the lab report. In Figure 1, I discuss the characteristics of my Technical Description genre. These are all limitations due to genre, which help us categorize papers depending on their purpose.
